The agreement between you and After Syntax
These terms cover your account, the Pro plan, the free trial, the AI feedback and your work. They also say what each of us can expect if something goes wrong.
In short
- You own what you write. We use it to run your practice, and for research only if you turn that on.
- AI feedback can be wrong. It is practice feedback, not professional advice.
- Pro costs US$12 a month or US$99 a year and starts with one 7-day free trial per person.
- Cancel in Settings at any time. Pro stays until the end of the period you are in.
- Paid charges are final, apart from charges made in error and refunds the law requires.
- Ontario consumer law protects you. Nothing here takes those rights away.
Who you are agreeing with
After Syntax is run by INAR Technologies Inc., a company in Ontario, Canada. In these terms, “we” means INAR Technologies Inc. and “you” means the person who uses the account.
You accept these terms when you create an account. When you start Pro, you accept them again at checkout, with the price you choose. The refund policy is part of these terms. The privacy notice explains what we keep and who handles it.
Your account
You must be 18 or older to create an account.
- Use an email address you read. We send account and billing notices there.
- Keep your password to yourself. One account is for one person.
- If you think someone else used your account, write to support@aftersyntax.com.
What After Syntax gives you
After Syntax gives software engineers practice assignments. Each one is set in a fictional system. You model the problem, predict what will happen, test your model in a simulator, improve it and get a review. Later, a short check-in asks you to recall what you learned.
You need an internet connection and a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Editing a model needs a screen at least 768 pixels wide, such as a tablet or a computer. On a narrower screen, After Syntax keeps your work and asks you to use a larger screen to edit the model.
We add, change and retire assignments and features over time. If a change removes something important that Pro includes, the rules in When prices or these terms change apply.
What the AI feedback is, and is not
The coach, the checks of your written rules and the review are written by an AI model, Anthropic’s Claude. The simulators follow fixed rules for a fictional system.
- AI feedback can be wrong. It can miss a problem, report one that is not there, or quote the wrong part of your work.
- A review is feedback on one practice. It is not a certification, and it is not written for employers.
- It is not professional advice. Do not apply it to a real system without your own judgment and your team’s review.
- A simulator result shows how the fictional system behaves under its stated rules. It does not predict how a real system will behave.
If a finding looks wrong, choose Question this finding on the review, or write to us.
Use After Syntax fairly
Do not:
- attack, probe or overload the service, or get around its limits, including the one free trial per person;
- copy assignments or other content in bulk, by script or by hand. Your own data is always yours to download from Settings;
- share your account, sell access to it, or let someone else practice under your name;
- try to get the hidden review criteria, answer notes or AI instructions, for example by writing instructions to the AI into your answers;
- use automated tools to create accounts or run practices;
- put real secrets into a practice. Practices never need source code, credentials, customer records, confidential plans or another person’s personal information;
- use After Syntax to break the law or to harm anyone.
If you find a security problem, stop and tell us at support@aftersyntax.com.
Pro
You need Pro to start a practice or to send a check-in answer. Pro lets you start any number of practices. Without Pro, you can still read the assignments and their lessons, read your saved work and debriefs, finish a practice you already started, and export or delete your account.
Pro costs US$12 a month or US$99 a year. Prices are in US dollars. Sales tax, such as HST, is added where it applies. Checkout shows each amount, with any tax, before you pay.
Stripe processes payments. Your card details go to Stripe, not to us.
The 7-day free trial
- Pro starts with a 7-day free trial. Each person gets one trial. We keep a coded record of the email address that used a trial, so a new account with the same address starts Pro without one.
- You enter a card at checkout. You pay nothing during the trial.
- Stripe emails you before the trial ends, with the date of the first charge and its amount.
- If you do not cancel before the trial ends, Stripe charges the price of the plan you chose on the day the trial ends. Pro then renews as described below.
- If you cancel during the trial, you are not charged. Pro stays until the trial ends.
Renewal and payment
Pro renews automatically at the end of each month or year, at the price of your plan, until you cancel. Stripe charges the card you gave at checkout on the renewal date. Settings shows the next renewal date. Before each yearly renewal, Stripe emails you a reminder.
If a renewal payment fails, Stripe tries again over the following days and emails you. You keep Pro while it tries. If the renewal payment still fails, your account no longer has Pro. If the first payment after the free trial fails, your account has no Pro while Stripe tries again, and Pro turns back on when the payment goes through. Your saved work stays.
Cancel at any time
- In Settings, open Plan and choose Manage billing. Stripe’s billing page lets you cancel in a few steps.
- Canceling stops the next charge. Pro stays until the end of the trial, month or year you are in. Then your account no longer has Pro, and your saved work stays.
- You can also cancel by writing to support@aftersyntax.com from your account’s email address.
- Deleting your account in Settings cancels Pro at once and stops all future charges.
Refunds
Paid charges are not refundable, apart from the cases in the refund policy and any refund the law requires. We do not refund part of a period after you cancel. We always refund a charge made in error. The refund policy gives the details.
When prices or these terms change
We may change the price of Pro, what Pro includes, or these terms. We change the price at most once in any 6 months.
Before a change that affects you, we email you at least 30 days and no more than 90 days before it starts. The email gives the new price or the new text, the date it starts, what happens if you do nothing, and a free, simple way to reply.
- A new price starts at your first renewal after that date.
- If you do not want the change, cancel before it starts. If you cancel a yearly plan because of the change, we refund the part of the year you have not used.
- If you do nothing, the change applies from the date given.
The date at the top of this page shows when these terms last changed.
Your work stays yours
You own what you write in After Syntax: your models, predictions, answers, notes and reflections.
You give us permission to store, copy, process and show your work so we can run After Syntax for you. That includes sending the part of your work that a question, check or review needs to Anthropic’s Claude through Cloudflare, as the privacy notice explains. This permission ends when you delete the work or your account, apart from the limited records the privacy notice describes.
We use your work for product research or evaluation benchmarks only if you turn those choices on in Settings, and only in de-identified form. The privacy notice explains research use.
We own the assignments, simulators, review criteria and the rest of After Syntax. Use them for your own learning, and do not copy or publish them. You may keep and share the reviews, debriefs and other feedback written for you.
If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them without owing you anything.
Pausing or closing an account
We may pause your account if we have reasonable grounds to believe you broke these terms, or to protect After Syntax, its learners or others. While your account is paused, you cannot start or continue a practice. You can still sign in to download your data or delete your account. Write to us to ask why, or to ask for access back.
We may close an account for a serious or repeated breach of these terms. We tell you by email first, unless the law or a security risk prevents it. If we close an account this way, we do not refund the current period.
If we close your account for any other reason, or stop running After Syntax, we give you at least 30 days’ notice to download your data and refund the unused part of any paid period.
You can close your account at any time by deleting it in Settings.
Availability
We work to keep After Syntax running and your work saved. We cannot promise that it is always available or free of errors. It may stop for maintenance or an outage, and an AI review may fail and need another try.
After Syntax saves your work as you go. To keep your own copy, download your data from Settings.
Our responsibility to you
Ontario’s Consumer Protection Act, 2002 and other laws give you rights that no agreement can take away, including the right to services of reasonably acceptable quality. Nothing in these terms limits those rights, or our responsibility for fraud, gross negligence or wilful misconduct.
Apart from that, and as far as the law allows:
- we are not responsible for decisions that you or your employer make because of a practice, a review or a simulator result;
- we are not responsible for losses we could not reasonably foresee, or for lost profits, income or opportunities;
- our total responsibility for all claims is limited to the larger of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and US$50.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there.
If something goes wrong, write to us first. We aim to reply within 5 business days and to put it right.
You can still take a dispute to a court in Ontario, including Small Claims Court, join a class proceeding, or complain to Consumer Protection Ontario. These terms never require you to use arbitration.
If you live outside Ontario, the consumer laws where you live may also protect you. These terms do not take those protections away.
